How it works

1. 1. You answer 10 short questions.

   Where you'll wear it, what you already like the smell of, how noticeable it should be, what to avoid and a rough budget band. Everything in plain language.

2. 2. A weighted scorer ranks the catalog.

   Seven fields carry score weight (max 100 points combined):

   • Familiar notes: 30 pts
   • Where you'll wear it: 20 pts
   • Impression: 15 pts
   • Climate: 10 pts
   • Projection: 10 pts
   • Budget: 10 pts
   • Marketing preference: 5 pts

   "Who is this for?", experience level and the optional free-text note are stored as context and do not add points in V1.

3. 3. Avoids are hard filters.

   Any catalog record whose metadata matches an avoid category is dropped before ranking and never reintroduced. If that leaves fewer than six results, we show fewer rather than sneaking excluded fragrances back in. This is a filter over the catalog's own metadata: not a promise that every scent you might subjectively dislike will be detected.

4. 4. You see the reasons.

   Each match shows the factors it earned points on, plus one candid caveat drawn from the same data. The number is a fit score, not accuracy or AI confidence. Ties break deterministically by fragrance ID.

About the catalog

101 fragrances across 49 houses. The V1 catalog is carried forward from the original ScentScout catalog. Entries are editorial and approximate: character notes, longevity and projection are best-effort descriptions, not independently verified measurements. Retailer availability and pricing change constantly.

For V1 launch, eight prominent records were checked against the brand's own product page and are marked with an Official reference badge and the date checked on the fragrance profile. Records without that badge have not been independently verified.

The catalog will be reviewed and updated over time. Every fragrance profile has an anonymous Report a correction button: if you spot something off, that's useful signal and future updates will lean on that kind of feedback. See the privacy notice for what feedback stores.

This is a curated starting catalog carried forward from the original ScentScout catalog. Entries are editorial and approximate: not independently verified. Retailer pricing and availability change constantly; always check the retailer before buying.

On AI

The live V1 matcher is deterministic: the same answers always produce the same ranking. No large language model affects rankings. There is no claim of being "trained on proprietary perfumery data." What you see is what the code does.

Optional grounded interpretation of the free-text note is a possible Phase 2 enhancement. It is not active in V1 and does not influence the current fit score.

Retailer links & disclosure

Retailer buttons open a search on the retailer's site: we never point at a specific product listing whose price and availability we can't verify. Current V1 links are neutral, non-affiliate search links. If affiliate links are added later, they will be clearly labeled and will never affect which fragrances appear in your results or where they rank.
